Sink Your Teeth In

So we promised to explain the apple this week. But first, we have to tell you some great news: INTERSTATE has been selected as one of the projects for West Edge Opera’s APERTURE program!

APERTURE is a totally innovative way for an opera company to involve its audience in the creation of new work. INTERSTATE, along with 21 other projects, will be creating content for West Edge’s audience over the next few months. At stake is the chance at a big commission, but no matter what, a big group of supporters will learn a ton and engage with a big community of creators. We are thrilled to be part of this and can’t wait to sink our teeth in.

You can learn more about APERTURE here.

So about that apple:

When you think about queens and apples, what comes to mind?

Snow White and that poisonous chunk?

Eve and the serpent and the Tree of Knowledge?

Paris and the golden apple handed to the best of the goddesses?

Apples are ubiquitous, sweet but sharp, practical, homey. Apple pie is the consummate family treat. But apples given to women are dangerous gifts, whether it’s poison disguised as a simple present, the prize for being the most beautiful, or the tasty simple package containing the serpent’s curse.

Apples are the punishment for being too beautiful, too inquisitive. Or not inquisitive enough.

That’s why we chose that green apple for our logo. We say to the ladies among us, take that apple. Take a bite and leave your lipstick all over it. Enjoy with no apologies, and eat it all. Show us your appetite, your desire, your hunger, your pleasure.

Also, one of these a day will keep the doctor away, or so we hear.
